2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.)  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605.  lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875.  king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well.  the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. 2003 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New hemi v8 brings more power. introductiondodge ram boasts high levels of refinement and comfort. Completely redesigned and re-engineered last year, this latest-generation ram has re-established dodge as a leading product among full-size pickups. But all this refinement doesn't mean the dodge ram has gone soft. The new-generation ram also delivers improved towing and hauling capability, plus more powerful and efficient engines.  for 2003, dodge has introduced a sophisticated new five-speed automatic transmission. A more capable off-road package has been added, along with a rugged work special. Also new for 2003 is a line of heavy-duty 2500 and 3500 models, not covered here.  in january 2003, the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 replaced the aging 5. 9-liter v8, increasing power by 100 horsepower and 40 pounds-feet of torque while improving fuel economy by 10 percent. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Prices start at $18,525 for a 2wd regular cab short wheelbase. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable regular cab models.  two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed adds $300-$350 to the price, and another 20 inches to the wheelbase. For maximum economy, two-wheel-drive rams can be ordered with a 3. 7-liter v6 that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8. The most powerful engine in the line is the new 5. 7-liter hemi v8 with hemispherical combustion chambers for improved airflow and burn. The new hemi produces 345 horsepower and 375 foot-pounds of torque. When properly equipped, that increases the towing capacity to 9200 pounds and payload by an additional 500 pounds. The hemi adds about $800 to the price.  a five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3. 7-liter v6 and 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is a new five-speed automatic 975) that includes an alternate second gear for hill-climbing and towing (so it's technically a six-speed). This new transmission is more responsive than the unit it replaces.  three trim levels are available, st, slt, and laramie.  st is the base level and comes standard with air conditioning, but is equipped with vinyl upholstery, wind-up windows, and manual door locks.  slt adds $1700-$3200, depending on cab style and driveline, and includes the 4. 7-liter v8, plus cloth upholstery, nicer interior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a host of convenience items, and wider tires.  laramie is the luxury package, which costs in the neighborhood of $7800-$8900 and brings leather seating surfaces, dual-zone air conditioning, a premium stereo, 17-inch cast aluminum wheels, and a long, long list of luxury features.  sport body-color trim for grille and bumpers is available for $470 with any trim level; that price includes fog lights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Also new this year is an off-road package 870-$1405) for 4wd models consisting of a 3. 92:1 limited-slip differential, heavy-duty engine cooling, lt275/70r17 all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and fog lamps. walkaroundram's radical big-rig styling turned the pickup world upside down when it was introduced in 1994. It was a highly successful design, one that gave the dodge pickups a look of power and capability. The bold styling also helped boost sales exponentially. So dodge had no intention of turning away from the big horse-collar grille and freightliner fenders when it redesigned the ram. This latest dodge pickup maintains and even reinforces the look established nine years ago.  the sheet metal is indeed all new. Park a 2002-3 ram next to a 2001 or earlier ram and the differences are striking. The design has been extensively re-sculpted for reduced wind noise and better rainwater management. The new ram looks sleek and refined compared with the previous model. The old one looks mashed down compared with the new one.  few grilles are as instantly recognizable as the massive horse collar grille of the ram. Even more massive this year, the grille also provides trim-level identification: the outside rim is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Laramie features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center.  moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before. The broad, sloping hood has a pronounced crown that falls over the sides to the prominent front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance.  standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors were completely redesigned last year.  the new interior is more comfortable than before. That comfort starts with roominess. To fit more space in the cab, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added it to the cab's total length. Dodge claims its regular cab has the largest interior of any full-size standard-cab pickup.  the cloth 40/20/40 split bench front seat in the sport model is quite supportive, better than some of the seats we've seen recently in other brands. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. Adjustable pedals are usually offered only with an automatic transmission, but for 2003 dodge has made them available on manual-shift pickups as well. We believe that's an industry first.  side-curtain airbags are a $390 option on regular cabs, $490 on quad cabs. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green.  the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate 'set' button, rather than just holding the station button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are easy to use. Likewise, cruise controls 390, including tilt steering) on the steering wheel are easy to operate.  otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. 2001 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All this practicality, and excitement, too. introductionwhile not as overtly outre as the previous generation, the current taurus remains a styling leader, sleek, fresh and contemporary, confidently leading the way to ford's future.  but like every previous taurus, this one grabs attention with its styling and then keeps it with its engaging combination of everyday practicality and enthusiast flair. Both of its powertrains deliver vigorous response. Its handling, while suitably smooth and comfortable, delivers a sporting crispness that will satisfy even the aspiring formula 1 driver in the family.  the cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. Next up is ses 20,050), with abs, six-way power seats, cd player, and 'aerodynamic' bumpers, among other luxuries.  at the top of the line is the $21,535 sel, also with 'aero' bumpers as well as a more powerful engine, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, heater mirrors, a perimeter anti-theft system, leather wrapped steering wheel, machined aluminum road wheels, and both cassette and cd capability.  a single wagon variant is offered. With its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, this roomy wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cu. Of cargo; or with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. The se wagon lists for $20,190. Adding option groups 96w 300) and 85a 1,040) upgrades the wagon to the equivalent of an ses sedan.  two engines power the taurus. Standard in all but the sel is a 3. 0-liter ohv 12-valve v6 ford calls the vulcan, presumably after the god of ironworking, not earth's staunchest interplanetary allies. It produces 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note.  standard in the sel is a more sophisticated 3. 0-liter dohc 24-valve v6 ford calls duratec. Se wagon, ses, and sel are all nominal six-seaters, equipped with a 'seating console' between their front buckets, and a column-mounted gear lever. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large, cat's-eye headlights. Taurus's flanks have handsomely modeled character lines, and the rear bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type. interiorprimary controls and instrumentation are admirably simple, straightforward and easy to use. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals 120) make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. Buttons for the cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel and are easy to operate. The highly legible gauges, which include an analog speedometer and tachometer, are white-on-black. A single stalk on the left of the steering column operates the washer and wipers and the bright/dim control for the headlights. The power-window automatic-down circuit operates on the driver's-side window only, and there is no automatic-up. On the dashboard just below the tachometer is an on/off switch for the optional traction control, useful when driving with chains and/or in snow.  on the other hand, the central console containing audio and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) controls is an intimidating sea of similar-looking push-buttons and toggle switches. While elsewhere the taurus is ergonomically first-rate, operating the controls on this panel requires very careful reading of the various closely spaced buttons. Among the audio controls, only the volume control is a rotary knob--it would be more convenient if the station-tuner were a twist-knob as well.  the removable six-cd changer/cassette is cleverly concealed in the center console at the driver's right elbow. Opening the panel required only one touch of the button, whereupon it opened automatically. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than cushy, but firm is usually best on long drives. Each of the lighted vanity mirrors in the two front visors features a rheostat for regulating their brightness, a novel touch.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, although the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. An hvac duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the ses and sel, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items. The trunk is of generous size and contains the taurus' mini-spare tire. driving impressionwhile the 2001 taurus is rich with interesting features, no list of hardware can sum up this car's greatest strength--its behavior on the road. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Its all-independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Unusual in a family sedan, however, taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, so that when it is pushed in the corners, it proves stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of the dodge intrepid.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, taurus comes very close to being a very good sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size. summaryvastly improved last year, the ford taurus remains more than just competent: it is a genuinely exciting family sedan.

2002 dodge stratus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Dodge's own charger comes to mind. Air conditioning plus power windows, mirrors and door locks are all standard on the se.  stratus r/t 20,940) comes with a 3. 0-liter single-cam v6, which delivers 200 horsepower. Optional anti-lock brakes (abs) cost $565 with a manual transmission, or $740 with an automatic, as in the latter case they come packaged with traction control.  safety systems in stratus begin with the rigid structure that wraps around the passenger compartment. The stratus coupe is more closely related to the new chrysler sebring coupe and mitsubishi eclipse; all three share engines, chassis and suspension designs, and are built at a joint-venture assembly plant between bloomington and normal, illinois. walkaroundthe slick shape of the stratus coupe demonstrates the benefits of wind-tunnel testing, as its arched structure slices through the air with a clean sweep from nose to tail. Its taut skin stretches across its long, broad form as smoothly as flowing water. Flat side panels seem to come from the nascar school of design, along with muscular shoulders suggesting strength and action.  the graceful profile and dramatic windshield rake reflect dodge's flagship sedan, the intrepid. Yet its stubby prow and body-colored, cross-hair grille reveal a relationship with the racy dodge viper. At the rear, shapely pillars slide down into rolled flanks, and a neat tail spoiler curves over bold corner lamps and the thick mass of a monochrome bumper. interiorgenerous passenger space comes from the coupe's architectural design, which extends the windshield forward, abbreviates space for the engine, and increases the length and width of the cabin.  high-back bucket seats come standard, although they are trimmed in different fabrics for the se and r/t. For an additional $1,045, the r/t can be ordered with cushy and comfortable leather; the package also includes six-way power and a homelink garage door system nicely integrated into the visors. The visors themselves are wider than the sharply raked windshield and are articulated on the end to allow them to bend around the a-pillar, which is not the ideal solution.  the tachometer and other instruments are tucked into deep binnacles beneath a bowed cowl designed to shield them from sunlight. Sculptured pods on either side of the center console create separate cockpit spaces for the driver and front passenger. The handbrake lever is on the spindly side.  above the console is a central stack of audio and climate controls. The ventilation system uses basic rotary dials with plastic vents that feel a bit flimsy. Stereo controls are small, with sliders for bass and treble that can be difficult to operate on a bumpy highway. A display at the top of the dash provides compass heading and outside temperature readings, useful information when out and about.  the stratus provides excellent outward visibility for the driver with broad, tall expanses of glass, and relatively narrow windshield pillars.  unlike some sport coupes, stratus has a room in the back seat for adult riders. The rear bench seats three, and the seat back is split 60/40 for access to the trunk. The front seat slides forward far enough to permit quick entry or reasonably graceful extraction. Few coupes provide as much rear seat leg space, although toyota's solara beats the stratus by more than an inch.  trunk space is the best in its class, exceeding most japanese coupes by three cubic feet and the ford mustang by more than five cubic feet. Its ride quality is smooth, yet firm enough to feel nimble in curves. The car is quick to respond to steering inputs, deftly changing lanes.  the r/t suspension is tuned stiffer still, and rides on wider tires. The se has 16-inch wheels with p205/60hr16 tires; r/t uses 17-inch wheels with p215/50hr17 rubber. Shock tower bracing increases chassis rigidity. In back, upper a-arms combine with lower lateral and semi-trailing links and coil springs. Anti-roll bars, which reduce body lean in corners, are standard. Straight-line stability and highway ride are particularly good, although we think the old avenger might have felt a little more confident when charging hard through a turn. Output reaches 147 horsepower with a manual transmission, and 142 with an automatic. That's good enough to beat the base engine in the toyota solara, and comes close to matching the power of honda's accord. It develops 200 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 205 foot-pounds of torque at just 4500 rpm. That's as much or more power than other v6 competitors. Nail the throttle and the r/t goes, whether starting from the gate or overtaking a slower car. When cruising, the v6 produces a sporty exhaust note pleasing to enthusiasts. Overall, the character of the stratus r/t lies somewhere between that of a pony car (camaro, mustang) and a more refined japanese coupe.  the standard five-speed manual is a short-throw stick that moves effortlessly fore and aft, with smooth clutch engagement and easy up-shifts. Take it easy, and the transmission shifts gently at relatively low engine speed. Stomp it and it stays in gear longer for better acceleration. Tackle a long downhill descent and it drops down a gear to add engine braking. Traction control, available on r/t automatics, is useful to reduce front wheel spin when accelerating on wet pavement. summarydodge stratus coupe disguises a spacious passenger compartment behind a sleek facade. The sporty stratus r/t adds v6 performance yet still holds the bottom line to a reasonable number. model lineupse 17,920); r/t 20,940). assembled innormal, illinois. options as testedabs 565); power sunroof 695). model testedstratus r/t 20,940).
