When Chrysler came out with a sliding side door on the driver's side it caught everyone by surprise, including Ford, which had to make do with an enlarged driver's door until last year when the newest version of the Windstar finally got a second sliding door.  This year it's Ford's turn to be first: The Windstar is the first minivan to feature power-adjustable pedals. 2005 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New models expand superb new lineup. introductionford f-150 has been the best-selling full-size pickup for 27 consecutive years, and it's the most important, most profitable vehicle ford makes. Last year ford threw away the old formula and created a new f-150 from the ground up. At the top is a new king ranch model lavishly outfitted in castano leather. At the bottom is a new v6 model available with an automatic or manual transmission. An inexpensive work truck model has been added as well. In between is the industry's widest variety of body configurations: three cab styles, three bed lengths, two bed styles, and a choice of v8 engines. The f-150 comes equipped with dual frontal airbags designed to deploy according to the severity of the crash and who or what is occupying the seat. The xl, stx, xlt, fx4, lariat, and king ranch each boast their own interior style and features. Engines, suspensions and cab configurations are designed to meet specific needs. Xl is readily identifiable by its black grille and fascia and 17-inch steel wheels, though it comes with chrome bumpers. Xl is available in regular cab or supercab (extended cab) styles. An f-150 xl 4. 2-liter v8 regular cab 2wd automatic short wheelbase retails for $21,455, but a v6 manual will lower that price to $19,610; a long-wheelbase 4x4 v8 automatic supercab is priced at $29,690. (manufacturer's suggested retail prices are subject to change and do not include the destination charge of $795.)  stx is sportier than the xl, with a body-colored grille-surround for the black bar grille, and 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Stx comes in styleside (flat) and flareside (fendered) body styles, in regular cab or supercab, with either a 6. 5-foot or a 5. 5-foot cargo box. An audiophile sound system with subwoofer and six-disc cd changer is optional. Stx starts at $22,285.  xlt is the most popular model, nicer and better-equipped than xl though not as luxurious as lariat. It comes with a honeycomb grille that sets it apart from the other models. Xlt comes in regular cab, supercab or supercrew, with a choice of 5. 5-, 6. 5-, or 8-foot bed lengths, and styleside or flareside body styles. A premium cloth interior is standard on the bench seats or optional captain's chairs. The xlt instrument panel gets more flash than either the xl or stx dash. Supercab, as well as supercrew versions, get power windows for the rear doors. The xlt also features an overhead rail console system that the owner can tailor to his or her needs. Fog lamps come standard on 4x4 xlts. An xlt supercrew 4x4 5. 4-liter v8 automatic retails for $35,275.  fx4 is a special off-road model. The interior features chrome trim and markings, and a floor shifter. Fx4 is available in regular cab, supercab, and supercrew body styles, with either 5. 5-foot styleside or 6. 5-foot flareside or styleside bed designs (no 8-foot bed). The standard engine is the 5. 4-liter v8. The fx4 has its own instrument package as do the rest of the models, with carbon mesh accents on the metallic dashboard. Captain's chairs in cloth or leather are optional, and 18-inch cast aluminum wheels are standard. An f-150 fx4 supercrew retails for $34,605.  lariat is the luxury model. It has its own grille design and comes standard with 18-inch wheels. Lariat features black-on-cream instruments, lots of wood trim and brushed metal, a multi-function steering wheel, and a shiny floor shifter mounted in a floor console. A power 40/20/40 split bench seat with seat memory is standard, along with power-adjustable floor pedals, an in-dash message center, and climate control. Heated power leather captain's chairs are optional. Lariat 2wd models are available in all three body styles, but 4x4 versions are only available with styleside fenders. An f-150 lariat supercrew 4x4 starts at $35,875.  king ranch features rich castano leather designed to capture the spirit of the historic texas cattle ranch. It comes as a supercrew distinguished by with a color-coordinated grille, arizona beige running boards, and other special trim. Inside are power-adjustable and heated captain's chairs in front, a 60/40 split bench seat in back, and unique interior tri. walkaroundredesigned for 2004, the ford f-150 looks much more manly than the previous-generation models. Its tall shoulders, bold front end and crisp lines give it a more utilitarian look that leaves no doubt that this is a serious truck. It's at least as stylish as the much-heralded dodge ram, but is totally different. In fact, the f-150 has a unique look, no small feat when designing within the hard parameters imposed by a pickup. In short, we think the new f-150 is a great-looking truck.  the f-150 has picked up styling cues from the handsome super duty pickups, including the sharp cut in the forward part of the door, allowing a clear view of the massive outside mirrors. A high beltline gives the truck visual strength and makes occupants feel more secure. The roofline is somewhat reminiscent of chopped-top custom street trucks.  the whole nose is shaped more squarely than the previous generation, which featured more feminine, more car-like curves. The grilles are larger and bolder. The front fascia wraps around to the fenders for a precise, sophisticated appearance. The bodyside and cargo box sheet metal is chiseled, though it looks more slab-sided at the same time, a theme that carries through the tailgate, giving the f-150 an upscale, utilitarian look that's very appealing.  the different trim levels are quite distinctive. Just one example: xlt and lariat have a honeycomb grille (black on xlt, brushed-nickel on lariat), while xl, stx, fx4, and king ranch use a bar-style grille.  practical considerations are a big part of the design, and some of this can be easily seen. Every bed, no matter which length or style, is two inches taller than previous-generation's beds to give more margin when hauling larger cargoes. The supercab (extended cab) doors are larger than the vestigial doors on the standard cab. At the other end of the spectrum is the king ranch, which evokes images of montana and cowboys. Lariat comes with every known amenity.  we found the xlt's front bench seats attractive, but they were flat and lacked support. The front bench is split three ways. They also looked great, trimmed in black leather with light gray stitching. Adjusting the power seats may be a little awkward for drivers with big arms because the clearance between the door armrest and the seat is a little tight; rake adjustment on the power driver's seat is manual, and raking it forward can be a bit awkward. The center console between the captain's chairs is deep and holds a lot of stuff and features a pair of big, solid cup holders. The floor shifter for the automatic works very well.  the radio and hvac controls are plain but straightforward and easy to operate. Giant mirrors afford an excellent view rearward. 2001 ford taurus review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All this practicality, and excitement, too. introductionwhile not as overtly outre as the previous generation, the current taurus remains a styling leader, sleek, fresh and contemporary, confidently leading the way to ford's future.  but like every previous taurus, this one grabs attention with its styling and then keeps it with its engaging combination of everyday practicality and enthusiast flair. Both of its powertrains deliver vigorous response. Its handling, while suitably smooth and comfortable, delivers a sporting crispness that will satisfy even the aspiring formula 1 driver in the family.  the cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. Next up is ses 20,050), with abs, six-way power seats, cd player, and 'aerodynamic' bumpers, among other luxuries.  at the top of the line is the $21,535 sel, also with 'aero' bumpers as well as a more powerful engine, automatic headlights, automatic climate control, heater mirrors, a perimeter anti-theft system, leather wrapped steering wheel, machined aluminum road wheels, and both cassette and cd capability.  a single wagon variant is offered. With its 60/40 split rear seats folded down, this roomy wagon has space for a maximum of 81. 3 cu. Of cargo; or with six passengers aboard, there's still 38. 8 cu. The se wagon lists for $20,190. Adding option groups 96w 300) and 85a 1,040) upgrades the wagon to the equivalent of an ses sedan.  two engines power the taurus. Standard in all but the sel is a 3. 0-liter ohv 12-valve v6 ford calls the vulcan, presumably after the god of ironworking, not earth's staunchest interplanetary allies. It produces 155 horsepower and 185 pounds-feet of torque. Although not particularly quick from a standstill, once rolling it delivers more than adequate performance, along with a nicely rorty exhaust note.  standard in the sel is a more sophisticated 3. 0-liter dohc 24-valve v6 ford calls duratec. Se wagon, ses, and sel are all nominal six-seaters, equipped with a 'seating console' between their front buckets, and a column-mounted gear lever. The grille is broad, aggressive, and unmistakably ford-oval, grinning between the large, cat's-eye headlights. Taurus's flanks have handsomely modeled character lines, and the rear bears a resemblance to the sexy stern of the jaguar s-type. interiorprimary controls and instrumentation are admirably simple, straightforward and easy to use. Ford's well-publicized adjustable pedals 120) make a comfortable driving position possible for even very short-legged drivers. The small-diameter, leather-wrapped steering wheel has a pleasingly thick grip. Buttons for the cruise control are mounted on the steering wheel and are easy to operate. The highly legible gauges, which include an analog speedometer and tachometer, are white-on-black. A single stalk on the left of the steering column operates the washer and wipers and the bright/dim control for the headlights. The power-window automatic-down circuit operates on the driver's-side window only, and there is no automatic-up. On the dashboard just below the tachometer is an on/off switch for the optional traction control, useful when driving with chains and/or in snow.  on the other hand, the central console containing audio and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (hvac) controls is an intimidating sea of similar-looking push-buttons and toggle switches. While elsewhere the taurus is ergonomically first-rate, operating the controls on this panel requires very careful reading of the various closely spaced buttons. Among the audio controls, only the volume control is a rotary knob--it would be more convenient if the station-tuner were a twist-knob as well.  the removable six-cd changer/cassette is cleverly concealed in the center console at the driver's right elbow. Opening the panel required only one touch of the button, whereupon it opened automatically. The cushions and seatbacks are more firm than cushy, but firm is usually best on long drives. Each of the lighted vanity mirrors in the two front visors features a rheostat for regulating their brightness, a novel touch.  the roomy rear compartment seats three, although the seat forms two semi-buckets and has a pull-down central armrest containing two cupholders. An hvac duct at the rear of the center console provides climate control for rear passengers. Dual baby-seat anchors are provided on each side of the rear seat. In the ses and sel, the rear seatback is split 60/40 and folds down, providing an enormous pass-through luggage capability for skis and other long items. The trunk is of generous size and contains the taurus' mini-spare tire. driving impressionwhile the 2001 taurus is rich with interesting features, no list of hardware can sum up this car's greatest strength--its behavior on the road. Its duratec v6 is as responsive as a finger snap, delivering crisp acceleration from low revs straight through to the glass-smooth full-throttle shift point. This engine not only provides good thrust, it makes an understated but nicely throaty declaration that it means business. Its shifts are positive, authoritative, and at the same time, almost impossible to feel. Its all-independent suspension provides a smooth, impact-free ride. Unusual in a family sedan, however, taurus uses gas-pressurized shock absorbers, so that when it is pushed in the corners, it proves stable, nimble and ready for more. Cornered hard, its body roll is moderate, and the nicely tuned variable-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering delivers a steady stream of road information. Braking performance was much smoother than that of the dodge intrepid.  with its excellent chassis and duratec power, taurus comes very close to being a very good sports sedan for the price of a family mid-size. summaryvastly improved last year, the ford taurus remains more than just competent: it is a genuinely exciting family sedan.

2010 ford escape review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A terrific compact suv. introductionthe ford escape looks like a little truck among small suvs. Its styling reminds us of ford's larger, truck-based sport utility vehicles. The escape's ride height and seating position are a bit higher than competitors such as the honda cr-v, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most other vehicles in the class.  yet the ford escape still delivers the advantages of unit-body, car-based competitors such as the honda cr-v. All variants, including the v6 and escape hybrid, deliver some of the best epa mileage ratings in the class. All models are offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  for the most part, the hybrid drives just like a conventional gas-only escape. It's a well-executed package. Folding the rear seats opens a good sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. There are lots of interior storage spaces, the finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best.  escape was redesigned for 2008. For 2010, changes are minor. An integrated blind spot mirror, mykey programmable vehicle key, rear view camera system, and active park assist are now available, and the escape also features hands-free sync with traffic, directions & information. All the features improve safety and reduce driver distractions.  the ford escape remains one of the more appealing vehicles in its class, regardless of price, and certainly one of the better values. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a six-speed automatic 1,210) is optional. The xls comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows, mirrors and locks, an am/fm stereo with cd and auxiliary jack, rear window defroster and 16-inch steel wheels.  options for the xls include remote start 345), sync 395), side step bars 345), and a security system 250).  the escape xlt 23,540) and xlt 4wd 25,290) add more standard features, including upgraded cloth upholstery, a power driver's seat, cruise control, privacy glass and 16-inch alloy wheels. A 240-hp, dual overhead cam 3. 0-liter v6 1,000) is optional on the xlt, and includes the six-speed automatic.  options for the xlt include a variety of packages, with the most comprehensive, package 204a 2,230), including a cargo cover, roof rack, wet towel bin, sync, a moonroof, leather, and ambient lighting. There is also premium sound with seven speakers 395), a dual-headrest dvd entertainment system 1,995), sport appearance package 895), 17-inch alloy wheels 695), and towing 345).  the escape limited 25,270) and limited 4wd 27,020) come standard with the v6 and automatic, plus leather seating, a six-cd changer and automatic headlights.  options for the limited include package 302a 2,250), consisting of the moonroof, premium audio system, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, reverse-sensing system, rear-view camera, and universal garage-door opener; and navigation with the premium sound 1,995).  the escape hybrid is available in two trim levels, the base version 29,750) and the base with 4wd 31,500); and the hybrid limited 32,260) and hybrid limited 4wd 34,010). The hybrid limited versions are equipped similarly to the limited models, but add the hybrid powertrain. Unlike some mild hybrid suvs, the escape hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.  safety features include front- and side-impact airbags for front occupants and curtain-type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The side curtains can remain inflated for several seconds in the event of a rollover, and are designed to slide between the side glass and occupants if the people are oddly seated or resting heads against a window. For starters, the escape sits a bit higher than many competitors, and the high profile is enhanced by its design.  the grille looks like it was designed for a truck. The headlights are essentially connected to the grille, and shaped to create a family resemblance with ford's edge crossover suv. Yet the grille itself is tall and flat and stacked right on top of a skid plate-type fascia that flows under the bumper. The escape's beltline, or the crease that runs just under the windows, is high, too, and its roof pillars are blacked out. The taillights have a clear band that wraps around the rear corners. The lower bumpers and rocker panels are now painted to match the body on all models, rather than molded in a matte finish. In total, the effect is cleaner and more polished than previous models, and it's all quite handsome.  the side mirrors are large, but their shape generates little noise as air speeds over them. The roof, too, is designed to reduce interior noise. Recessed channels running its length are intended to move air more quietly over the surface. Horizontal ribs underneath the panel add structure, which limits flex in the metal and reduces booming noise inside at high speeds.  we're fond of a couple of features in back of the escape. A new step pad on the bumper provides secure footing for anyone who steps up to put something on the roof rack, and the two-piece tailgate is handy. The rear glass can be popped open with the key fob, so dropping small items like a gym bag into the cargo area is much easier than it might be with some competitors, which require hefting the entire gate upward. interiorthis is one of ford's best interiors in terms of the look and feel of materials used. It looked like the lacquered finish on a fine piano. The satiny black or silver used in lower trim levels isn't bad, either. Yet the highlight is a woven-look, rubberized trim on the dash and console. It looks sporty and suited to a more expensive car.  the escape features upholstery cloth made from 100-percent recycled material. Overall, though, the seats are smaller than those in a larger sport utility. Drivers with big frames might find them small. There's not an abundance of side bolstering, but that makes it easier to slide into the seats, and there's enough to keep occupants solidly in place during the type of driving a typical escape owner is likely to undertake.  the gauges are clustered in a shaded binnacle that can be absorbed in a glance: tachometer left, speedometer right, with fuel and coolant temperature in the middle, along with an easy-to-read trip- and systems-info display. We absolutely loved this, because it includes a menu that allows the driver to easily cycle through and change features such as headlight-off delay and auto-locking.  the gauges and switches feature ford's new signature backlighting style, which the company calls ice blue. No gripe here, as the bluish white is crisper and brighter than conventional green-yellow or orange lighting. The problem is the script on the gauges, and particularly the speedometer. The big vents at the ends move lots of air, and there are two more in the middle near the top of the center stack. These can be aimed to avoid blasting the driver’s hands or face with a rush of air. At the very top sits a neat display that shows compass heading, date and time, exterior temperature and, on models so equipped, the two interior temp settings.  when it comes to placement and function of switches, the escape is first rate, and examples are easy to find. When the driver rests his or her left for.

1998 ford f-150 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The trendiest of the trucks. introductionford's f-series pickups are proof that barnyard workhorse trucks will never be their squared-off selves again. Wheelbase lengths of 119. 9 in., 138. 5 in. Wheelbase, which means all f-250s are either extended cabs or long cargo beds. But, by and large, there ought to be something here for just about anybody. The xlt trim includes several items that might otherwise be options. The total for this high-line truck came to $31,450. In smoothness, it embarrasses every other full-size truck engine on the market. The power delivery is crisp and responsive, and to good low-end power it adds excellent mid-range and higher-speed power to make short work of real-world demands such as quick acceleration to freeway speeds. It replaces the ancient twin i-beam, and we're thankful. With this suspension, the ride is far better, handling is superior, steering feel is drastically improved and directional stability, such as when traveling at highway speeds in a severe crosswind, is immensely enhanced. We would expect that tire wear would also be better, as this was one of the many weak points of the twin i-beam. With the 40/60 split-bench front seat, driver and passenger have individually reclining backrests. What can serve as the center backrest is also a folding armrest; when folded forward, it provides a large cupholder and capacious bin. Inside this storage bin are places for coins, cassette tapes and so forth, and a divider which, when removed, allows space for an 8 1/2 x 11 tablet. There are a pair of cupholders in the instrument panel, and a goodly number of the expected storage compartments and map pockets here and there  the view outward is superb, as the f-series styling includes a low beltline and big windows all around. Even fairly short drivers should have decent forward visibility. The only vision-related gripe we had was a vertically narrow inside rear-view mirror, which cut down on the view to the rear  all supercabs include a third door on the passenger's side for entry to the back seat. This door is operable once the passenger's door is open, and can be opened from inside or out. Two adults should be reasonably comfortable on longer trips in the back seat. With the rear seat folded forward there's a flat, sturdy steel surface, great for carrying toolboxes or large amounts of luggage. driving impressionpeople familiar with trucks, particularly those familiar with ford trucks, will find the driving experience in the new f-series greatly enhanced. A high degree of directional stability adds to safety and comfort because it keeps the vehicle headed down its intended path  ride, too, is remarkably good. One big problem with pickup trucks has always been how poorly they tend to ride when empty; this can become really annoying on long trips down concrete interstates where trucks can bounce ceaselessly. There's no truck-like roar or rumble, no feeling that it starts thrashing at higher speeds. Whether driving around the city or taking an extended highway cruise, the 5. 4-liter triton engine is the most velvety full-size pickup truck engine we've encountered. The smaller, 4. 6-liter version is equally smooth, but it's less powerful, and we highly recommend the stronger 5. 4-liter v8. But the ford is certainly the sleekest of the bunch  there's a lot to like about it in addition to the look. The interior is extraordinary, the triton v8s are silky and strong, the ride and drive is exceptional and it's full to the brim with worthwhile features.
